solar system 太陽系;
Every year BBC makes a list of 100 special women. Some of them are leaders, some are people with great ideas, some have started groups to help others, and some are everyday heroes. This year, there are two Japanese women on the list. Takamizawa Setsuko is 90 years old, but she has started learning English so that she can help tourists who will come to the Tokyo Olympics. That’s amazing at her age! Okoda Yuki is also on the list. She is only 23 years old, but she has already discovered a new star. Her discovery may help other physicists understand how our solar system began.
the Hans Christian Andersen Award 国際アンデルセン賞
Have you ever heard of Kadono Eiko? She will get the Hans Christian Andersen Award this year. People call this the Nobel Prize for children’s books. She has written many children’s books, but most people know her because of “Kiki’s Delivery Service.” It is Kadono’s best known book. It’s about a girl who is a half-witch. She can ride a broom and has a black cat named Jiji. After she leaves home, she makes a living delivering things on her broom. Kadono has written at least five more books about Kiki. Actually, I have never read any of the books, but I have seen the movie by Miyazaki Hayao. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Tokyo had an election for governor yesterday, and for the first time a woman will be the governor of Japan’s largest city. There were 21 candidates (people who wanted to become the next governor). I think this election was more exciting than the last one because more people voted. The top three candidates got about 90% of the vote, but no candidate got over 50%. Even so, Koike Yuriko was the clear winner. She didn’t have the support of any major party, but she got almost 3,000,000 votes. Masuda Hiroya, who came in second, got fewer than 1,800,000 votes. On December 1, Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Facebook, put the following message on his own Facebook: “Priscilla and I are so happy to welcome our daughter Max into this world!” With the birth of their first child, he and his wife have decided to change the world. He wrote, “We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to join many others in improving this world for the next generation.” I’m glad that people with so much money want to help other people, and I hope that the Zuckerbergs can change the world for the better.
