2014年11月23日「モバイル英語学習」第271 号(エッセイ ): Takakura Ken

********************
I was sad to hear about Takakura Ken’s death. He was one of the great actors of the Japanese screen. Actually, he didn’t plan to be a movie actor. Someone from the Toei movie studio found him and put him in a movie. He started out in “yakuza” movies, and he became known as the Clint Eastwood of Japan. In his later movies he played many parts. I remember seeing him as a policeman in “Black Rain” and as the manager of the Chunichi Dragons in the comedy, “Mr. Baseball.” He made more than 200 movies in his lifetime. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2014年7月26日「モバイル英語学習」第255号(エッセイ ): Mr.Morrie

********************
Last year five friends of mine, our English teacher and I read the book “Tuesdays with Morrie” in English. Through the year, we read it slowly and carefully, and sometimes we discussed it. The book is about Mr. Morrie. He had a disease, ALS, which means his body muscles got weaker and in the end he couldn’t even breathe. Of course he must have been really distressed, but he kept loving his family, his friends and…his life. He accepted his condition with his beliefs. I was moved by his way of living and his words. In addition, I was glad to have such an opportunity to read it with my friends and the teacher. I really enjoyed the seminar, and I want to thank them for the opportunity. Ziona Chana 67 is no ordinary man. He lives in South India in a four-storey house with his family. But this is not your ordinary family – it is the largest family in the world – 181 members to be exact. Ziona belongs to a sect which allows men to have multiple wives. He now has 39 wives, 94 children, 14 daughters-in-law and 33 grandkids! The house has 100 rooms and is run like a military camp. According to Ziona he is the luckiest man in the whole world. His reason for getting married was so he could look after poor and orphaned village women. One meal can see them pluck 30 chickens, peel 132lb of potatoes and boil up to 220lb of rice – and that’s just dinner! (by Prof. Simon Smith)

In 1923 Raffaele Bendandi predicted that on January 2, 1924, a major earthquake would strike Italy. He was wrong – by two days. It struck on January 4, killing 30,000 people.
Bendandi died in 1979 leaving many other predictions. One such prediction was for the 11th of May 2011, in Italy, in which he predicted total devastation. Because of this many Italians took a day off. On that day, however, no earthquake occurred and the city slept peacefully. In Spain on the same day however an earthquake hit a small town killing 9 people – it was the worst earthquake in forty years. (by Prof. Simon Smith)
