2018年12月11日「モバイル英語学習」第582号(英語のエッセイ): Winter is Here!

Winter has finally arrived. After a long autumn with many warm days, the weather has suddenly turned cold. In fact, it is colder than usual. On Sunday, most parts of Japan had temperatures that didn’t go over 9 degrees, and the low temperature in Nagoya was 3 degrees. I had to travel 45 minutes by motor scooter, and I bundled up. I wore six layers of clothes including a down vest and a winter coat. Even with so many clothes, I started to feel cold inside by the end of the trip. Luckily I wasn’t riding my motor scooter in Sapporo. It was minus 4, and there was snow on the ground! (by Douglas Jarrell)

2018年10月26日「モバイル英語学習」第571号(英語のエッセイ): Mixed feelings

Notes:
invade (…に)押し寄せる、侵害する、侵す;
concentrate on ~に集中する

My husband retired in July. He had worked hard for over 40 years. At the same time, I had tried to keep our family peaceful and comfortable. My husband and I like traveling, so we are looking forward to visiting many countries together. I am very grateful to him. However, I am used to being alone at home and enjoying my own free time. After his retirement, I have started to feel like he is invading my privacy. I can’t concentrate on my hobby. I think we need to sit down and talk about how to respect each other’s time. I hope we will be able to come to an agreement soon. (written by a reader, edited by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Notes

My wife and I went shopping after dinner on Saturday night. The parking lot at the large shopping mall was rather empty when we arrived at 8 p.m. When we got to the supermarket section, however, it was full of people. First, we went to buy vegetables, but there wasn’t much left. She chose some zucchini and celery, and we walked on to the fish and meat display. There was hardly anything on the shelves. My wife was very surprised and said, “I’ve never seen the shelves so empty!” Everyone was getting ready for Typhoon Trami (Typhoon 24). The shoppers I saw had baskets full of instant noodles! 2018年8月21日「モバイル英語学習」第561号(英語のエッセイ): Goodbye, Aretha Franklin

Notes:
pass away 亡くなる;
gospel 福音;
———————————-
A great American singer died last week. Aretha Franklin passed away at the age of 76. I remember hearing my first Aretha Franklin song in the 1960s when I was a high school student. That was a great time for American music because black musicians like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder were bringing new sounds into pop. Aretha started as a gospel singer in her father’s church, but she decided to become a professional singer. During her career, she won 18 Grammy Awards and had many hits, but I still think her best song is “Respect,” the song I first remember hearing. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
