According to the news, the temperature in parts of Hokkaido will go down to minus 16 degrees centigrade today. The sea ice has come in from the Okhotsk Sea along the north side of the island. It is very cold, but it isn’t as cold as it is in some parts of the U.S. Temperatures around the Great Lakes have dropped to minus 30 degrees. When the wind blows, it can feel like minus 45 degrees. The government is telling people not to stay outside for a long time. It is so cold that the zoo in Chicago will be closed for a couple of days.
If you live in an area where there is no snow, you can see gardeners outside trimming trees. This is a busy time of year for them. Why do they choose the winter to do their work? There are two reasons. One reason is that many trees lose their leaves, so it is easier for gardeners to see which branches they should cut and which ones they should leave. Another reason is that the tree doesn’t lose a lot of sap . The tree is sleeping, so it doesn’t go into shock when it is cut. When spring comes, the sap comes back up, and the tree starts to grow again. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

The world’s longest sea bridge is going to open today in southeast China. The bridge is 55 kilometers long and will link Hong Kong with mainland China. One problem is that people in Hong Kong drive on the left and people on the mainland drive on the right. The bridge is part of the mainland, so people will have to drive on the right as soon as they get on the bridge. It is also a “smart” bridge. There are cameras along the bridge that watch drivers. If a driver yawns a lot, an alert goes off. China built the bridge to link several cities and make a high-tech area as famous as Silicon Valley. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
A terrible earthquake hit Hokkaido on September 6. I felt very sorry for the people there. Actually, my daughter and her family live in Furano. The earthquake there registered 4 on the Japanese scale. I was very worried about them because they have little children. There was a blackout, so they didn’t have any electricity. Finally, I got a call from her. Fortunately, nothing was damaged, and everyone was safe. She said that the family enjoyed watching the stars during the blackout. She had never seen such a stunning star-filled sky! I was surprised at how positive they were about it.
